What Your Email Inbox Says About You (you might be surprised!)

Hey hey hey guys- so, today we are talking all about emails & what your inbox really says about your PERSONALITY.

**but also a little talk about summer cami dresses… cause with this heat, it’s really all I can wear rn**

MAINLY though, we gotta talk inboxes, because I just found out that the contents, or lack thereof, of someone’s email inbox can actually say A LOT about a person.

If I am borrowing someones phone for a quick sec, I can’t help myself than look at how many unread emails they have (I don’t actually open their inbox, cause that’s invasive, but I do take a quick peek at that red circle with unread notifications).

I literally cannot help myself.

Personally, I am the biggest OCD email inbox neat freak you ever met. Over 20 & I am having a full blown conniption. If my inbox is messy, my life feels messy, then my house gets messy, & everything pretty much falls apart.

My inbox is the first thing I battle starting my work day, & I pretty much stay on top of it throughout the entire day. My inbox, along with my text messages, are just running to-do lists, so when something is handled- it’s either filed or deleted.

I’ve always looked at peoples inboxes as metaphors of their lives. Chaotic email inbox = chaotic life. Organized inbox = got your shit together.

That is until recently, when I stumbled across this article, & I realized that I am actually so so so so wrong. Surprisingly wrong! Messy inboxes are actually a common trait of bossy bitches who know how to prioritize, while cleaned out inboxes can be a sign of serious control freak disorder (oops).

Let’s break it down…

Your Email Inbox Personality Type

1. The Inbox Slayer

*always at zero, or pretty damn close.*

This, my friends, is me. I am forever on the quest for that coveted “no new mail” alert.

Typically I hover around the 5-10 mark, but INBOX ZERO is always the goal. I am the queen of unsubscribing & have no problem deleting automated emails without even opening them.

For the important ones, I read & take action. Whether I file it or delete it, it finds a place OUT of the inbox. The inbox is basically a running to do list for me, so the more I can clear out, the more productive I will be.

The email slayer typically has more of anxious personality (ahem, YES) & when their inbox starts to fill up, it releases anxiety inducing cortisol. Email slayers are known to be control freaks (guilty) who seek constant order in their lives (also guilty). Email slayers can be too quick to jump on things & a bit too hasty.

Your obsession with having everything in order, even your inbox, could very well be taking energy away from the more important things in life (such as hobbies, work commitments, & quality time).

2. The OCD Organizer

*out of site, out of mind?*

A follow up from the Email Slayer, the OCD organizer is similar… but different.

They spend majority of their time color coding their email inbox folders & making sure everything finds a tidy little home.

This type of email organizer is also all about control. They most often have a chaotic life & use their inbox to keep things mentally under control. As if email organization will magically clean up your messy life.

They star, they flag, & they move around… yet they often spend SO much time organizing, that they rarely get around to actually answering. They are literally compartmentalizing their inbox, & then forgetting about it.

You will also find TONS of drafts written up in this inbox, possibly more drafts than they have emails in their inbox.

This group of people are both perfectionists AND procrastinators. They care more about the organization of their inbox rathe than actually answering the emails & dealing with them.

2. The Email Hoarder

*reads, but never deletes*

To my surprise- a big chunk of people are actually the email hoarding type. Although it baffles me/drives me absolutely nuts just looking at an email inbox with 1500 read messages, it sorta works for some people.

These type of people are often perfectionists & slight control freaks.

The perfectionist in them says to leave the mail in the inbox & they will eventually get to it with a solid/well thought out response (although sometimes this takes a very long time since there are now SO many emails to sift through).

The control freak in them is fearful to move the email to another folder or the trash in fear it will get forgotten or has something important in it. That is just WAY too risky for an email inbox hoarder.

These are the type of people who keep three page to do lists, but often it gets too overwhelming, they end up never getting to it.

4. The Free Spirited Type

*zero f*cks given, thousands of emails piling*

OH MAN. I really get along with this type of person, mainly because I am so compelled by them. If I am north, they are south. If I am black, they are white. Polar opposites at it’s finest.

The free spirited emailing type just DGAF. Sometimes they read, sometimes they don’t, sometimes they delete, sometimes they don’t.

Surprisingly, rumor has it that this type of email inboxer can actually be some of the smartest around. They can prioritize the importance, & leave the rest, not even wasting a second of their time deleting and organizing. If it’s not important, they don’t even click it, & move on to respond to something of ACTUAL importance.

They are laid back, don’t get stressed easily, can compartmentalize very well, & realize that spending all day organizing their inbox will not in anyways help them with the important stuff in life.

SO- now that you’ve got the full breakdown, hopefully you know more about what your inbox keeping ways say about you. I definitely learned more about myself from this post. I always thought INBOX ZERO meant I was on top of my shit, but truth is- I may not be prioritizing my time very well. While those free spirited email types are really making the most of their time by not losing their shit mid day over a full inbox.

What inbox personality are you? Share below! I am so curious to learn where most people stand when it comes to their inbox organizational ways.

Time to get back to my inbox now (*stressed face emoji here*). x, E

  1. I love this article! I always thought I was the only one to use my inbox as a to do list but apparently not, haha!

  2. I get nervous just thinking about being a free e-mail spirit. That way I’m just like you and feel bliss when I actually make it down to zero (right now I have one, so I’m pretty darn close). For my work e-mail I have a weekly task set up to clean up e-mails. I just don’t like it messy. Whether online, nor in real life (except of course… the car)
    wishing you a great day

  3. I am definitely the first as well and damn proud of it! Haha, I may have a few in there from time to time that will take me a day or so to get back to, but the important ones I deal with and file away right away! Can not handle a full inbox at all. No way!

  4. I represent the free spirited emailing type – just get too many to possibly read them all + just DGAF… Sometimes I read,
sometimes I don’t, sometimes I have a delete fest, sometimes I don’t – pretty sure my inbox would give you a heart attack :)

  5. Don’t worry, I am also the email slayer just like you, you’re not alone. :P But I don’t think I’m going to change that though…I don’t know if I can, I love clearing out my inbox so much…it’s basically the first thing I do EVERYDAY!!!
