Fridge Chic: DIY Gold Animal Magnets

diy animal fridge magnets

A while back, my little DIY group & I made the most adorbs critter dishes. The project called for plastic animals, which are typically sold in bulk. Considering each of us made 1-3 dishes, I was left with about 25 extra critters.

What the hell am I going to do with 25 plastic kiddy animals? Give them all the Midas touch, naturally. Once something get’s dipped in gold, it is automatically 20x cooler.

Yet I was still left w/ 25 GOLD plastic animals. One golden hippo on the coffee table = tres chic, 25 of them = borderline hoarder. I was handing them out as parting gifts to anyone who came over, but couldn’t seem to unload them all. They were stored away until I found a use for them.

Low & behold, moving into my new house, I finally found a use for them- sexy little fridge magnets!! I am obsessed.

P.S. They would also make for a rad gift :).

  1. This is such a great idea. Love this & the critter dishes – so rad.

PS: I recently discovered your blog and it has quickly become one of my favorites!

  2. Ah the Buttless Lion, a worshipped symbol in many ancient tribes!
Great and simple tutorial! I’ll keep it in mind the next time I decide to revamp my kitchen…As of now, I just have free magnets from the mail cluttering the darn thing.

  3. What did you use to cut them? Was it fairly easy? I’ve been wanting to try this project!

    1. I used a sharp knife :) they are pretty easy to cut through, just be careful!!

  4. Quick question- I am looking for about 150 of these (fronts and butts) to hold place cards for my upcoming wedding. I will have the guests names calligraphied on a card and placed in between the animal’s front and butt… One person quoted me $400 to make them!!! I am ok with making them myself- or paying someone a reasonable price to do them for me- so if interested let me know! Other wise, do you mind letting me know where you got the animals or what brand they are?

    Thanks so much!

    1. Hey there- what an adorable idea! I ordered mine off Amazon (found here). It’s $10 bucks for a tube of 12 animals- so doing the math it would be about $330 just to order the animals– I would search on Google for a cheaper price (maybe search animals in bulk??). Good luck & thanks for visiting the blog!!

    2. I’m doing the exact same thing &i found the animals on shindigz.com for $2 per dozen. Hopefully you haven’t already ordered them!

  5. These look great. I’ve attempting them, but I’m running into an issue with the “filler”. The animals I got were hollow inside, so I needed to fill them with something before attaching the magnet. I tried caulking first, but after two weeks it still wasn’t completely dry.

    1. hmmm– mine were solid on the inside but maybe you can try air dry clay? that could work! let me know :)

      1. That would have been a good idea. I did finally get them to dry by filling them 2/3 the way with caulk, and then the rest of the way with hot glue.
