How to Host a Chic & Succesful Garage Sale

garage sale tips

Moving is a bitch- trust me, I know…I am doing it as we speak. Really though, I am actually writing this post between taking breaks to and from my old place to my new place with a car full of boxes. Not to mention yesterday I was up at 5am hosting my very first garage sale.

Which I must say, regardless of the early call time, was a huge stress reliever & a great success. Basically a yard sale is a must if you’re moving- out with the old & in with the new.

Here are my tips on how to host a garage sale without breaking a sweat, cause freaking out (& sweating) is not hot.

garage sale checklist

Purge purge purge- how host a garage sale:

+ Out with the old, & in the new. Use the money you make to buy new stuff, & trust me- if you do it right, you will make money.

+ Start early, around 6am. Be sure to start off the morning with a cup of tea & a healthy breakfast. You will need the energy.

+ Be sure to dress comfy & cozy. Think leggings/ sneakers/ an oversized tee/ a warm sweatshirt/ & a baseball cap. It’s cold in the AM so layer up & be ready to move… but still be cute (obviously).

+ Don’t forget sunscreen, if it gets sunny later in the day, you don’t want to get burned.

+ Be sure to advertise anywhere & everywhere. Put up signs an hour before the sale on the corners of your street and the streets leading up to it, use arrows! Also, post on Craiglist in the garage sale section.

+ Display things pretty. You may think it’s okay to throw everything onto your driveway & expect it to fly off the cement… but it’s not that easy. Set things up nicely & organized, have plenty of tables displaying all your smaller things, & pull the big furniture out to the street so people can see it (they love big furniture).

+ Use your tablet (if you have one) to price everything out & keep an inventory, also get a square reader so you can take cards!

+ Ask other people to sell stuff in your sale, & enlist help… just be sure to bring donuts & coffee as a thank you. Plus people love food! Maybe even get some for the early bird shoppers.

+ Have outlets ready to test electronics, write down what sells & for how much so that you can divvy out the correct amount of money to your roommates/fellow sellers, & have a tape measurer ready.

+ Anything that doesn’t sell, you can have salvation army pick up for free.

Remember when I talked about the totally unproductive stress cycle? Yea, it does absolutely NO good. So… take a deep breath, get rid of as much as you can, & get excited to make your new place that is a blank canvas for you to decorate just how you like (using the money you made from your succesful yard sale, of course).

Now… back to moving! GTG.
